Gomoku FAQ
What is gomoku?
Gomoku is a two-player strategy board game where players take turns placing black and white stones on a grid. The goal is to be the first to form an unbroken line of five stones in any direction — horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. It's also called Five in a Row, Gobang, or Omok.
Is gomoku the same as Go?
No. Although they use the same board and stones, gomoku and Go (Weiqi/Baduk) are completely different games. In Go, the goal is to surround territory by placing stones strategically. In gomoku, the goal is simply to make a line of five. Gomoku is much easier to learn and faster to play.
Is gomoku the same as Connect Four?
No. Connect Four uses a vertical 7×6 grid where pieces fall due to gravity. Gomoku is played on a flat 15×15 grid where you can place stones anywhere. Gomoku offers much more strategic depth and freedom of movement.
How long does a game of gomoku take?
A typical casual game lasts 3-10 minutes. On a smaller 9×9 board, games are even faster (2-5 minutes). Tournament games on a 15×15 board can last 15-30 minutes.
What board size does gomoku use?
The standard gomoku board is 15×15 intersections (same as a Go board). However, 9×9 and 13×13 boards are also common for casual and beginner play.
Who goes first in gomoku?
Black always goes first. This gives Black a slight advantage, which is why the Renju variant adds restrictions on Black to balance the game.
Is gomoku a solved game?
Yes — it has been mathematically proven that with perfect play, the first player (Black) can always win on a 15×15 board. However, this proof (by Victor Allis in 1993) involves strategies too complex for humans to execute perfectly. In practice, games between skilled players are still competitive and interesting.
What is Renju?
Renju is the professional variant of gomoku developed in Japan. It adds restrictions on Black (the first player): Black cannot make double-threes, double-fours, or overlines (6+ in a row). White has no such restrictions. Renju also uses 26 designated opening patterns.
Can I play gomoku online for free?
Yes! You can play gomoku right on our website — no download or signup required. Choose between playing against our AI opponent (with adjustable difficulty) or challenge a friend in local two-player mode.
What is the best first move in gomoku?
The center of the board is the strongest first move. Starting in the center gives you the most flexibility to build lines in all four directions (horizontal, vertical, and both diagonals).
What are the basic strategies for beginners?
Start in the center, learn to create double threats (forks), keep your lines open (avoid blocked ends), and balance offense with defense. Don't spend all your moves blocking your opponent — build your own threats too.
Where did gomoku originate?
Gomoku originated in ancient China over 4,000 years ago. It was later adopted and refined in Japan (where it became Renju) and Korea (where it's called Omok). Today it's played worldwide under various names.
